You finish work, you are tired and feel like a piece of shit. Your outfit looks horrible as usual because of lack of time in the morning. Your friends are probably tired too, and they aren’t in the mood to meet you. What can you do? Check out your Instagram is so easy. You are seeing your favorite influencers, who are spending a wonderful time in attractive destinations and wearing fashionable clothes (look at Chiara – her T-shirt is from Bershka). Now you’re feeling shitier than before. What can you do? Go to the chain stores is so easy. Trends, Sales, Loud Pop Music blunt your senses. You are a princess in marketing heaven feeling like your favorite influencer. You are happy. In the end, you buy new clothes about which you have no clue.
You wake up the morning after. Your new clothes look horrible on you. You feel like a piece of shit. What can you do? Check out your Instagram is so easy.
In a nutshell, this was my teenagehood, and this is a scenario for many women. Shopping is about feelings, and fashion corporates know how to work with them. How to solve this problem? You could tell me that we should quit fast fashion, but unfortunately, life is more complicated. If you’re not living in the secondhand paradise (the Czech Republic is not), working in the fashion industry or being a rich person (to buy everything in slow fashion stores), you have to visit chain stores from time to time.
So the main point of this article is to show you my decision-making process. It means how I’m shopping in real life.
You could tell me: “Madlen, you’re such a hypocrite, You shoot with clothes by Zara, you have so many things, and now you’re speaking about slow fashion because it’s trendy.” So keep calm. I’m a fashion blogger, and the meaning of “influencers” is creating posts on a regular basis (more is better). This is my hobby (I’m not paid by “evil corporates”), so I only do what I love. My biggest passion is to create fashion shoots (or call it editorials), I love playing with different clothes, moods and observing what work on pictures. That’s why I need more clothes than the average person. However, I’m still a poor student, so I’m using what is available. But I do not own everything from my photoshoots (f.e. I borrowed it from my friends).
So, How to buy in chain stores and do not feel like a pure evil
An Ideal Customer is a person who has no idea what he wants to buy. That’s why it so easy to manipulate with him and to sell him every trend. But we are cool people, who already know:
What is our personal style
I’ve been surprised that many women have no personal style. These girls are less likely satisfied with their wardrobe and more susceptible to compulsive shopping. However, if you have no permanent fashion taste, trends are everything, but they are changing every two weeks! That’s why you are ending with a gigantic amount of clothes, but nothing goes together. (And you feel like a piece of shit). Are you a tomboy, edgy girl, elegant lady, …? Find your style.
What colors suit our skin tone
Some colors can help you to achieve radiant skin, but some colors can make you pale and ugly. Find your skin tone and don’t waste money.
Have some clue about fibers
Check up a textile fact sheet before purchase. There is a huge difference between natural and synthetic fibers. Synthetic fabrics (f.e. Polyester) are usually cheaper, but also less breathable and sustainable. Personally, I rather buy clothes from natural fabrics – I look less cheap and feel more comfortable.
To learn how to care of our clothes and wear it multiple times
This is a big deal. We have to learn that it’s totally normal to wear one piece of clothing for a long time. The life is not Instagram where every new pic means new clothes. You are not a wretch if you have just a few items, you care of them and have them for a long period of life. (How to care of your clothes? Read more in the following post for subscribers_only)
Write a list
Before shopping, I look at my wardrobe and write a list of items which I need to buy because I less likely buy another useless bargain. Buy what you really need and want (no another insta trend).
Finally, do not forget that fashion is fun and the way how to express yourself. Don’t take it so seriously and enjoy this process of self-education, like me.
